Beryllium granuloma of the skin.

چکیده
Granulomatous lesions of the skin produced by beryllium compounds were first described by Grier, Nash, and Freiman (1948), but no case occurring in this country has yet been published. As interest in the effects of exposure to beryllium has grown with the increased use of this metal during the last decade, a case of multiple beryllium granulomatosis of the skin occurring in a girl of 20 years is described. The patient was employed in a factory making fluorescent tubes. The makers of the tubes informed us that the fluorescent powder used at the time of the injury consisted of a mixture of zinc beryllium silicate with an average beryllium content of about 8%.

Chronic beryllium disease: diagnosis and management.
Chronic beryllium disease is predominantly a pulmonary granulomatosis that was originally described in 1946. Symptoms usually include dyspnea and cough. Fever, anorexia, and weight loss are common. Skin lesions are the most common extrathoracic manifestation. Granulomatous hepatitis, hypercalcemia, and kidney stones can also occur. Radiographic and physiologic abnormalities are similar to those...
متن کاملBeryllium disease.
The increasing use of beryllium in a variety of industries continues to be a hazard. New cases are still being reported to the UK Beryllium Case Registry, now numbering 60 in the period 1945-1988. The majority of cases follow inhalation which results in acute beryllium disease (chemical pneumonitis) or more commonly chronic beryllium disease--a granulomatous pneumonitis. Granulomatous skin nodu...
متن کاملBeryllium skin patch testing to analyze T cell stimulation and granulomatous inflammation in the lung.
Chronic beryllium disease (CBD) is characterized by granulomatous inflammation and the accumulation of CD4(+) T cells in the lung. Patch testing of CBD patients with beryllium sulfate results in granulomatous inflammation in the skin. We investigated whether the T cell clonal populations present in the lung of CBD patients would also be present in the involved skin of a positive beryllium patch...
متن کاملLinear granuloma annular of the finger
Granuloma annulare(GA) is an inflammatory benign cutaneous disease of unknown etiology that may manifest different clinical features. The most common presentation or classic form of the disease is manifested as flesh colored, annular grouped papules, commonly involving the hands and feet. Various skin injuries and infections have been reported to trigger GA, including insect bites, warts,...
متن کاملPartial IL-10 inhibition of the cell-mediated immune response in chronic beryllium disease.
Chronic beryllium disease (CBD) provides a human disorder in which to study the delayed type IV hypersensitivity response to persistent Ag that leads to noncaseating pulmonary granuloma formation. We hypothesized that, in CBD, failure of IL-10 to modulate the beryllium-specific, cell-mediated immune response would result in persistent, maximal cytokine production and T lymphocyte proliferation,...
